Important Info to Help You Decide

What happens after I hire you to create my web site?

After we've talked about what you would like, as far as the number of pages and the type of site it will be, I will send you a cost estimate. If you agree to what I have outlined and quoted you for the site, I will then send you a contract - which essentially reiterates what the cost estimate stated except with some legal mumbo jumbo added (to protect you as well as me).

Once the contract is signed by both of us, and you have paid a 50% down payment of the total cost, I get out my crayons and begin!

So you have my deposit $$ - now what?

One of the most important parts to designing your site, is that I know anything and everything that you want. What if you don't know exactly what you want? That's why I will ask you a bunch of questions, such as your favorite colors, fonts, what mood you want your site to reflect -- happy, playful, serious, funky, plain -- the list goes on and on.

Consider it like a word association thing - off the top of your head, rattle off everything that you envision your site to be. Remember, the more information that you give me, the sooner that I will be able to create something that you'll fall in love with right away.

How long will it take before my site is done?

If I have a good handle on what you want, chances are I will create something that you like within the first, maybe second, design that I show you. That's what constitutes the time frame for the most part -- how soon you like what I have created. Once you're happy with the colors and the layout, the rest is downhill from there.

Domain Names, Hosting... Help!

You are not alone! Many, many of my clients come to me not knowing a single thing about how all of this web stuff works. They just know that they want a web site. That's what I'm here for.

A domain name is the name of your web site. Keep in mind that you can't always get what you want. To find out if the name that you want isn't already taken, you'll have to do a search on a site such as GoDaddy - type in the domain name that you're considering to see if it's taken. You'd be surprised at the odd combinations of names that are already registered to someone else. If the name is taken, keep trying different ideas to come up with a unique name for your web site.

Web site hosting means that you need a place on the Internet for your site to live. It has to "live" somewhere and have an "address" so that people can visit you.

Both domain name registration and hosting are recurring fees to be paid in yearly increments.

Long Distance

It doesn't matter where you live. I have clients all over the country, and everything is done via email or snail mail - not a problem. If you're in my corner of the world, be prepared to meet at my off-site office - Starbucks! My psycho dog prevents me from meeting anyone in my home office (not to mention that I'd be forced to clean before you arrive!).

I use NetObjects Fusion to design all of my web sites. Unless you own the software, it will be difficult for you to maintain your own site. There is a companion component that will make it possible for you to do so. Mention this when we talk.

For the most part, I don't do shopping carts. I have many resources that do a far better job at it than I do. A PayPal shopping cart is the extent of my programming ability. Hey! I'm more of a right-brained thinker than I am a technical left-brain person... what can I say.

I enjoy working with artists and creating their web sites, but that doesn't mean I don't create business sites as well. What I do not do is work from templates. Yes, they're all over the place but don't bring them to me and have me put them together.

How much is it going to cost? It all depends on how much work is involved to create your site. How much time, how many graphics, how intricate... I quote per project. We can talk about that as well.

Screen Resolution and Why Do I Have to Scroll Horizontally to View your Whole Page?

While I try to design a web site to work without scrolling horizontally, for both 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 screen resolutions, sometimes it all doesn't fit at the larger resolution. Not to mention, a screen res of 1024 x 768 is the most commonly used these days.
